FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) - Allen County is setting a new standard in how residents pay their taxes. A new machine will soon give taxpayers more options.

A full service kiosk will be available starting in October at the Allen County Treasurer's Office. It will be able to do everything the tellers do. It will take cards, checks and even cash.

Allen County is the first county in the country to use this type of technology in a treasurer's office.

It will be placed outside the door of the treasurer's office, in the Ed Rousseau Building, just next to their drop box.

The county treasurer, Susan Orth, says many people prefer paying online but they can't pay online using cash. This new technology will allow them to pay with cash at the kiosk.

Orth also says some people don't have computers. She believes this kiosk will make things easier for them and will eliminate lines at the office.

In addition, the county treasurer says this will save her department money, because processing payments this way will be cheaper. She expects the $23,000 machine to pay for itself in two years.

"I really like it, for my own self, just to go to the grocery store. I'll go to that check yourself out line every time if I can, if I don't have too many items, because it's so much quicker and it's just more efficient I think. I like to be able to make things cost less for people and be quick, save them time," said Susan Orth, Allen County Treasurer.

There will be no charge from the county for taxpayers to use the kiosk. However, credit card payments will continue to incur fees from the credit card companies. That is something taxpayers already see when making online payments.
