FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - "Just the aesthetics of it is completely unique. There's not a YMCA in town that looks like this," said Renaissance Pointe Executive Director Ebony Young.
When you drive down Creighton Street near the Fort Wayne Police Headquarters on Fort Wayne Southeast side, the first thing you notice is Renaissance Pointe.
It's an urban renewal housing project but many are still vacant.
Drive a few more blocks on Creighton Street, make a right turn on Bowser Avenue and you will see another Renaissance Pointe... the new state of the art Renaissance Pointe YMCA.
"There hasn't been too many new things on the Southeast side lately. But hopefully this YMCA will be a catalyst for home development in this area. That's what it was intended to do," said Greater Fort Wayne YMCA President & CEO Marty Pastura.
"When I grew up in this particular area. There were manned and staffed parks there were youth centers," said Abundant Love Church Pastor Gary Bush.
"When those facilities closed it kinda fragmented the community. I believe that this facility not just because it's a wonderful facility. I believe because of what it offers and what it houses with serve to bring the community together," said Bush.
Two basketball courts, a massive fitness and weight room and an 86-degree pool are just some of the amenities.
However, workers believe the community outreach rooms will make an even bigger impact.
"We understand that kids can't be who they need to be unless parents are involved. That means a grandmother, an aunt, an uncle whomever. But we don't just want this to be a facility that is just a drop off center for kids, we want this to be a family friendly focus type of facility," said Young.
The community is invited to an open house Saturday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
The Renaissance Pointe YMCA will officially open Monday morning.
