FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) -- Halloween is just a week away.

So how worried should you be about sex offenders living in your neighborhood when your kids go trick-or-treating?

The detective in charge of Allen County's sex offender registry says there is no state law to prevent offenders from giving out candy on Halloween.

While he says this is not a time to panic, it may be time for you to educate yourself so you know who your neighbors are.

While there has not been a Halloween incident involving a Hoosier child since 1969, you can always check the Allen County sex offender registry to see where in your area convicted offenders and sexual predators live.

Detective Jeff Shimkus says some common sense next Thursday will go a long way.

“Don't let them trick-or-treat alone. For the kids out there, there's no reason you should ever go into anybody's house to get candy. It should be done at the door. Do the trick-or-treat, say thank you, and get your candy and go. But there's no reason that anybody should be going into anybody else's houses,” Shimkus says.

About 4% of Allen County's population has already signed up for email alerts whenever a registered sex offender moves within a mile of their address.

Detective Shimkus says 99.9% of the people on the sex offender registry will try to either groom you or your children, not snatch them off their doorstep while trick-or-treating.

He says make sure you don't use one of the offenders as a baby sitter or let your kids play in their yards, and you should be fine.
