Subzero Temps Raise Health Concerns (VIDEO)

FORT WAYNE, Ind. ( 21 Alive) -- With the cold weather heading its way to the Midwest, staying healthy and safe is a number one concern.

The cold air coming through our viewing area will be setting records with below freezing temperatures.

Being outside in these subzero temperatures makes you more susceptible to hypothermia and frostbite. Make sure all exposed skin is covered that way you can stay warm and safe during these arctic temperatures.

"For anyone who has to be outside, would be to definitely layer your clothing, so you want to have loose fitting layers of clothing on. You want to make sure that when you do layer that clothing it's all dry and that if you start to get wet at all, that you go inside and take off the wet clothing. Put dry clothing on. I would say frequent breaks are going to be very important, so getting out of the cold and getting re-warm is going to be very important, especially with these temperatures for anyone who has to be outside,” Doctor Abbey Massey said.

Anyone can be at risk, but there are two groups of people who are more likely to suffer injuries from the cold.

"Elderly as well as children are going to be the most at risk for these types of injuries and keeping them out of this cold weather is going to be the most important."

For children, it's best to limit their time playing in the snow to a minimum, they are less likely to realize they have frost bite than adults.

"Kids lose heat much more rapidly than adults so it's not even that they get cold because their bodies do not contain heat like adults do, so I would say at sub-zero temperatures, sledding should be a few minutes at most but it's probably best when it warms up some."

If you are outside for longer than expected and feel discomfort, there are warning signs you may have frostbite.

"Pain and tingling and redness are kind of your first symptoms that Frostbite is coming and that means you need to get directly into a warm area and get out of the exposed area."

Certain medications can also prevent the body from being able to heat up properly. In this weather, the safest bet is to stock up on all your needs and stay inside.
