INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) -- The debate over whether to keep one of the most controversial forms of Indiana government is heating up at the Statehouse.
Lawmakers are drafting legislation aimed at dismantling township government.
Under the bill being drafted all of the state's 1,006 townships would be eliminated and their duties transferred to county councils.
Representative Jerry Torr, who drafted the bill says, “You don't really lose the checks and balance because you transfer that to the county council, so there'd still be a check and balance , you just wouldn't have1,000 townships, you'd eliminate 3,000 elected positions."
Torr's bill would also allow taxpayers to get rid of the township trustee position through a referendum.
