FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) - Continued success for Canterbury High School's girls basketball program has meant a bump up in classification in 2013-14.
The Lady Cavaliers move to Class 2A after winning a 1A state championship last March, and their fifth in six years.
Despite the reclassification, Canterbury is poised to have another great season with hopes of another deep playoff run. The Lady Cavs have loaded up their schedule yet again, which could really toughen the team up.
"Hopefully we'll be able top keep the same type of game plan," head coach Wayne Kreiger says. "There won't be a lot of changes. Just a little different from the standpoint of who's in those spots."
Canterbury is led by All-State candidates forward Kindell Fincher, who signed her letter-of-intent with Xavier University, and guard Darby Maggard. Katherine Smith returns as a post presence, and the Cavs' offense should be a solid one.
"We need to keep pushing the ball, and keep doing what we do best," guard Darby Maggard says. "We need to keep preparing for every game like it is our last."
"we're very strong offensively, and we're going to work hard on defense," Fincher adds.
The offseason focus has been defense and on-the-ball pressure that will create turnovers and allow Canterbury to use their transition game.
Canterbury is once again a team to watch in our area, and could be a formidable team in 2A.
