Cincinnati --- The Komets clipped the Cyclones in Cincinnati Friday night to open the second round series with a 1-0 advantage and remain undefeated after five trips to Cincinnati this year including the regular season meetings.
Both teams came out charging in the first period however the Komets out-shot the Cyclones 9-5 with no scoring on either side of the board.
The teams traded goals in the second with the Cyclone’s Wade Megan opening the scoring with his fifth goal of the post-season. The Komets’ Mike Embach (F) scored the equalizer, the third goal of the playoffs for the former Cyclone and the first playoff power play tally for Fort Wayne, at 17:00 with assists from Dean Ouellet (F) and Brandon Marino (F).
After 19 minutes 52 seconds of a scoreless third period Fort Wayne’s Christian Ouellet (F) shocked the Cyclone crowd of 1,307 with the game winner on assists by Scott Fleming (F) and Embach, his second point of the night, and sealed the win for the Komets.
Goaltender Ben Meisner earned his fifth win of the playoffs making 22 saves on 23 shots while Cincinnati’s Rob Madore suffered the loss allowing two goals on 36 Fort Wayne shots. Gamesheet
Game 2 will faceoff at 7:30pm Saturday night at the U.S. Bank Arena in downtown Cincinnati. It will mark the 500th playoff game in the 62-year history of the Komets in Fort Wayne. After Saturday’s match, the series switches to Fort Wayne for games 3, 4 and 5 (if necessary) beginning Thursday night, May 8, at 7:30pm at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.
