INDIANAPOLIS (www.incnow.tv) - Bishop Luers ran out to a 27-0 lead and then held off a comeback by Indianapolis Ritter for a 40-28 win in the IHSAA Class 2A football state championship game Friday night.
It is Luers' fourth consecutive title, which ties a state record with Warren Central, who won four straight championships in Class 5A from 2003-06, and Lafayette Central Catholic who earlier Friday won its fourth straight in the Class 1A title..
Luers also tied Indianapolis Bishop Chatard with 11 state football titles overall.
Ritter closed the gap to 27-21 before Jaylon Smith ran for a 16 yard touchdown with 2:36 left in the game to give Luers a cushion
Smith ran for 150 yards and three scores, while Luers as a team amassed 424 total yards and 24 first downs.
The Knights will be honored with a rally at school Monday afternoon.
