SOUTH BEND, Ind. (21Alive) - Months after electing to go with FieldTurf at Notre Dame Stadium, crews began installing the field in pieces on Tuesday.

The new playing surface not only signals a new era for Fighting Irish football, but could lend itself to new traditions, too.

The diagonal lines will remain the end zone paint scheme. The 18 lines (9 in each end zone) are at 42 degrees, toward the Basilica of the Sacred Heart and the Golden Dome. 1842 is the establishment of the university.

The historic interlocking "ND" logo will be painted at midfield. Two green shamrocks will adorn each 35 yard-line.
