TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) - South Side came up on the short end of a seesaw battle with Bedford North Lawrence in the IHSAA 4A Girls Basketball State Championship on Saturday night.
The Lady Stars finished an undefeated season with a 54-51 title victory over the Lady Archers, who finish 24-4.
A three-pointer from junior Sammy Dillman helped Bedford North Lawrence get enough distance late in the fourth quarter. Sophomore tandem Alexa Bailey and Dominique McBryde both scored 19 points for the Stars. Bailey is daughter of former Indiana and Fort Wayne Fury star Damon Bailey. Damon Bailey serves as Bedford North Lawrence assistant coach.
The 4A championship saw 12 lead changes and 5 ties, a much different story than Bedford North Lawrence's 24 point blowout of South Side in January.
Senior Ariana Simmons led South Side with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Juniors Brittni Clopton and Lakyn Gulley each added 9 points.
"It took us a long time to get here," Simmons says. "We fought for everything. This means a lot to our school. Hopefully next year, they can end up coming back."
While the Archers' title hopes were dashed, the state runner-up finish is the best in school history.
"They're a group that came in with a lot of passion and desire," South Side head coach Juanita Goodwell says. "They're forever etched in history."
