Fort Wayne (Indiana's NewsCenter) – Sean Murphy’s career-high 13 strikeouts limited the Fort Wayne offense to just one run on Wednesday night, as the Burlington Bees downed the TinCaps 3-1. Murphy recorded eight of the first nine outs via the strikeout, and allowed four hits over his outing. All three runs for Burlington were collected with one swing of the bat on a three-run home run from Douglas Landaeta.
Fort Wayne (7-13) starter Cody Hebner (2-1) struck out seven batters in his first start at Parkview Field. The Auburn, WA native took the loss, allowing two hits and walking one. Hebner struck difficulty in the fifth inning, when after striking out the first two batters, he walked Royce Consigli, hit Bobby Crocker with a pitch, and then surrendered the longball to Landaeta. It was Landaeta’s third home run of the season.
Murphy (2-1) retired 12 consecutive batters from the second out of the third inning through the first out of the seventh. His previous career high for strikeouts was six, which he had done three times. Burlington (10-10) then used Ryan Doolittle out of the bullpen for the eighth and ninth innings. The righty surrendered one run in the ninth inning, as Duanel Jones grounded out to provide the lone TinCaps run.
The Fort Wayne offense was 0-10 with runners in scoring position and stranded five men on base. Jace Peterson, who was 2-4, led off the TinCaps’ first with a triple, but was stranded after three consecutive strikeouts. In the third, Peterson singled and stole both second and third, but Murphy struck out three batters in the inning, again thwarting a chance for Fort Wayne to put a run on the board.
Game two of the series is scheduled for Thursday night at Parkview Field. The scheduled starter for the TinCaps is southpaw Frank Garces, and Burlington plans to send righty Jonathan Joseph to the hill. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM.
