FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Defense made the difference in a heart-pounding 67-66 University of Saint Francis win over Huntington University in one of four Mid-Central College Conference Tournament opening games on Wednesday night.
Instead of coming down to a game-winning shot for the Foresters, the difference was a game-winning steal with Q Owens producing the pilfer to secure the Cougars' fourth consecutive win in MCC Tournament play. HU had what appeared to be the final possession, but Owens harried Ryan Boester into the turnover with about 1.2 seconds left.
USF sophomore Scott Kohne scored what proved to be the game winning points with 56 seconds to play giving USF a 67-63 lead. MCC Player of the Year Caleb Kennedy converted a 3-point play with 47 seconds to play. USF worked the clock down, but Daniel Palombizio stepped on the baseline setting up the final drama in the last 11 seconds.
Owens scored 18, Kohne 15 and Kevin Dawson 11 for USF. Dawson also had 10 rebounds for his eighth double double this season.
Kennedy led HU (17-14) with 22 points and 11 rebounds. He scored 16 points in the second half. Shane Merryman scored 16 and Boester finished with 11.
It was USF's third win over HU this season.
HU led 35-34 at halftime. USF outscored the Foresters 33-31 in the second half.
