UNDATED (21 Alive) - Former Norwell baseball star and current San Diego Padres minor league infielder Josh VanMeter has left for four weeks of baseball work in the Dominican Republic.
VanMeter, who hit .289 for the AZL Padres in 44 games after being drafted in the fifth round in June by San Diego, is looking forward to getting more baseball instruction from Padres coaches.
The Padres invited 50 of who they consider top prospects to this workout period, including 2013 TinCaps Max Freid, Hunter Renfroe, and Joe Ross, along with 2012 TinCap and former Leo and Indiana Tech star Brandon Alger.
VanMeter is also eager to learn more about the Latin American way of life so as to better understand his teammates from that part of the world.
