Dons Fall Short Of NCAA In Five

(Fort Wayne)- No. 3 IPFW had No. 1 South Dakota State as their last hurdle to an automatic bid to the NCAA Women's Volleyball Tournament. In a five game match it was the Jackrabbits who would get the bid, defeating IPFW, 3-2, (30-21,30-27, 28-30, 18-30, 15-12).

IPFW's Cynara Martins and Mayara Schlindwein were named to the All-Tournament Team.

The South Dakota State Jackrabbits will receive the automatic bid for the Summit League to the NCAA tournament.

South Dakota State would take an early 2-0 lead in the match. In the third game, the 'Dons sprang back, taking a 12-9 lead before the Jacks would tie it up at 12 all.

SDSU would pull ahead by three, 18-15, but the 'Dons weren't going to let the match go as they pushed ahead to a 21-19 lead. Mayara Schlindwein would give the 'Dons a four point lead at 29-25 and would finish the match with a kill for the 'Dons, 30-28.

IPFW took the momentum from game three into game four as they ran off to a 4-0 lead to start the game. A few points later they were ahead by five, 10-5 and an error by SDSU would give IPFW a ten point advantage, 20-10.

IPFW would dominate in game four, taking the game 30-18, and tying the match up at 2-2, forcing a game five.

South Dakota State would start game five with the advantage, taking a 3-1 lead. The 'Dons tied it up at 6 all on a Cynara Martins' service ace, but the Jacks would have the advantage at the switch, 8-7. The game would be all tied up three more times before South Dakota State took the advantage at 12-11 and were able to hold the 'Dons off for the match and automatic bid, 15-12.

Five 'Dons finished in double-digit kills and three had double-doubles to wrap up the tournament.

Mayara Schlindwein led IPFW with 28 kills, a personal best. She added three service aces and six digs.

Rebekah Roehm had a double-double with 20 kills and 14 digs. Cynara Martins also had a double-double with 12 kills and 29 digs. She added two block solos in the match.

Jessica Miller had 13 kills and Taryn Parker had eleven.

Jessica Dominiak had a double-double with 68 assists and 11 digs. Peachy Jankowski dug 20 balls in the five game match.

The Jackrabbits had three ladies with 22 kills, Mackenzie Angner, Kristina Martin and Amy Anderson. Angner and Martin also had double-doubles with 19 and 16 digs respectively. Anderson hit her double-double with 11 blocks.

Melia Iwamoto had a double-double with 67 assists and 11 digs and Samantha Pearson had 23 digs for the Jacks.

The Mastodons (20-11, 12-4 Summit) will wrap up their season next Saturday, November 24th against the Valparaiso Crusaders. Match time is 7 PM in the Gates Center.
