FORT WAYNE (Indiana's NewsCenter). – Saint Francis and Trine played to a standoff in a preseason football scrimmage Thursday night at D'’Arcy Stadium.
No score was kept during the two quarters of game-like play, but both teams scored once apiece during the two regulation quarters. Both teams scored twice in the goal-line and 10-plays-from-the-40 period.
Trine got its only TD on a 99-yard interception return from Aaron Selking after picking off a Shaine Tierney pass at the Trine 1-yard line. Tierney later made amends connecting with tightend Ben Clifford for a 24-yard TD pass in the second quarter.
Jarrell Hunter had an interception for USF in the end zone thwarting a TU bid for six from the USF 6-yard line. Bryan Hardister blocked a 33-yard TU field-goal attempt by Jeremy Howard as time ran out in the first half.
TU’s Mario Brown had the long run of the scrimmage with a 40-yard dash. USF’s Frank Wolfe broke off a 17-yard gainer. USF senior tailback Daniel Carter was held out of action with an undisclosed injury as a precautionary measure.
Several hundred fans from both schools attended the scrimmage, the first meeting between the schools since then Tri-State University moved from NAIA to NCAA Division III after the 2002 season.
