POINT LOOKOUT, MISSOURI (Indiana's NewsCenter) - A breakaway lay-up by Qadr Owens gave St. Francis the lead with 40 seconds to play and the Cougars held off top-seeded Walsh to win their first ever NAIA national championship, 67-66.
St. Francis became just the third double-digit seed at #15 to capture the title and the second lowest (Oregon Tech won it in 2004 as the 16th seed).
DeJovaun Sawyer-Davis, who was named the championship's most outstanding player, led all scorers with 22 points while Matt Edmonds 14 points, Qadr Owens 11, and Ferdinand Morales-Soto 10.
The champion Cougars will be honored with a rally at Hutzell Center scheduled to begin at 8pm Wednesday night.
