Fort Wayne, Ind. – The Indiana Tech women’s basketball team fell 78-67 to the Cornerstone University Golden Eagles on Wednesday night in the Schaefer Center. After trailing by as many as 13 in the second half, the Lady Warriors rallied back to cut the deficit to five. But CU would go on a late 10-2 run to put the game out of reach.
Cornerstone entered the contest having won four of their last five and with the win, improves to 11-6 on the year and 4-1 in league play. Meanwhile, the Warriors drop to 9-8 overall and 1-4 in the WHAC.
Tech scored four quick points right out of the gate to jump on top of the visiting Golden Eagles early, but CU would use a 9-2 scoring run over the next five minutes to go up 9-6 at the 14:17 mark. The Warriors retook the lead after four straight points but Cornerstone responded with a basket to take an 11-10 lead and would never trail again.
The Golden Eagles led by seven, 36-29, at halftime and extended their advantage to 13, 46-33, five minutes into the second period. With Tech trailing 57-46 at the 8:30 mark, the Lady Warriors scored eight of the next 10 points to trim the deficit to just five with 5:34 to play.
Cornerstone used a timeout to slow the Warrior momentum and came out with six straight points to push the lead back to double digits and eventually hold on for the win.
Junior Simone Russell (Peoria, IL/Illinois Central) and sophomore Ulyssia Richmond (Temple Hills, MD/Riverdale Baptist) both finished in double figures to lead the Warriors. Russell, the reigning WHAC Player of the Week, had 17 points while pulling down 11 rebounds to record her first double-double of the season. Richmond finished with 13 points, three rebounds, and two assists. Brittnay Jones (Harper Woods, MI/UTEP) and Keona Bruen (Indianapolis, IN/South Suburban) also chipped in nine points apiece.
The Lady Warriors return to action on Saturday, January 7 when they travel to Sylvania, Ohio for a conference matchup with Lourdes University. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
