Fort Wayne (incnow.tv) – The Indiana Tech men’s basketball team survived a scare from a tough Concordia University team on Wednesday night, but held off the visiting Cardinals’ late charge for a 72-62 victory.
Senior Antonio Cannon (Indianapolis, IN/Ancilla) matched his career-high with 20 points, scoring 15 in the second half to lead the Warriors to their fifth straight win.
Concordia (3-7, 2-3 WHAC) led 8-5 at the 16:00 mark, but a 14-0 run by the Warriors (10-2, 4-1 WHAC) would give Tech a comfortable lead.
Antonio Landers (Monroe, LA/John Wood) scored two of his 14 points with 8:24 remaining in the first half to give the Warriors a 13 point lead, 27-14. The Cardinals began to chip away though and ended the period on a 14-5 run to trim Tech’s advantage to four, 32-28, at the break.
The Warriors quickly pushed their lead to nine early in the second stanza, but Concordia would keep the game within striking distance.
A three-pointer from Cannon midway through the half put Tech up 55-47, but eight unanswered points by the Cardinals tied the score with just under six minutes to play.
Concordia would keep the score close for the next few minutes, but with the Warriors clinging to a slim three point edge, Jordan Hickman (Bardstown, KY/Vincennes) found Henry Sidney (Monroe, LA/John Wood) who buried a huge triple from the corner at the 2:09 mark to go up 64-58.
Tech’s defense took over from there, coming up with a couple key stops down the stretch and the Warriors would knock down their free throws to seal the win.
The Warriors, who own the nation’s No. 1 defense against the three, held one of the WHAC’s top three-point shooting teams to a season-low 22 percent from behind the arc. Tech also held a 37-33 advantage on the glass.
Cannon added eight rebounds to his 20 points while Hickman finished with 16 points, six boards, and four assists. Landers recorded his first double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
The Warriors hit the road for a two game stretch beginning with a trip to Adrian, Michigan for a conference matchup with Siena Heights University on Saturday, Dec. 8. Tip is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
