INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Scott Dixon took pole position in the
Indianapolis 500 on the first day of time trials for the May 25th
race.
Dixon's team, Target Chip Ganassi Racing, canceled out a
four-lap average of 225.178 miles per hour and the New Zealander
made the gamble pay off with four laps above 226 for an average of
226.366.
Teammate Dan Wheldon had held the provisional pole after the
first flurry of qualifications today, but he ended up second. That
gives the Target Ganassi team the top two spots in the lineup.
He knocked Danica Patrick off the top spot. She wound up in
fifth position, in the middle of Row 2.
Qualifying for positions 12 through 22 will be tomorrow and for
positions 23 through 33 on May 17th. The final day of qualifying,
May 18th, will be for bumping, regardless which day a driver
qualified.
