NEW YORK (AP) - Mark Teixeira and Hideki Matsui
touched Pedro Martinez for solo home runs
and the New York Yankees evened the World Series at one game apiece
with a 3-1 victory over the defending World Series champion
Philadelphia Phillies.
Teixeira connected in the fourth inning. Matsui put the Yanks
ahead with a two-out homer in the sixth.
A.J. Burnett was sharp on the mound for the Yankees. He allowed
just one run on four hits in seven innings before giving way to
Mariano Rivera.
The Phils threatened in the eighth with runners on first and
second and one out and Rivera facing Chase Utley, who homered twice
in the Phillies' Game 1 victory. But Rivera got Utley to slap into
a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.
The 38-year-old Martinez took the loss to the delight of the
Yankee Stadium faithful, who booed lustily when he was taken out in
the seventh inning. Martinez allowed two runs on six hits and
struck out eight in his six-plus innings. Rivera got the six-out
save, striking out Matt Stairs for the final out with a runner on
second.
The series has a travel day before it shifts to Philadelphia for
Game 3 Saturday night. Andy Pettitte goes for the Yanks against
