FORT WAYNE, IN (January 1, 2012) –The Fort Wayne Mad Ants beat the Canton Charge 104-103 Sunday night at the Fort Wayne War Memorial Coliseum. The lead changed on nearly every possession in the final minutes.
The Canton Charge jumped out to a quick nine point lead before Fort Wayne power forward Darnell Lazare took over and scored 12 first quarter points to pace the Mad Ants and push out to a three point advantage by the conclusion of the opening frame. Led by Tyrell Biggs’ and his nine points, Canton shot 60 percent for the opening frame.
Fort Wayne and Canton continued to match each other basket for basket in the second quarter. Antoine Aguido of the Charge stepped up for his team and scored 14 points in the quarter. Lazare maintained his strong game as he built his point total to a game-high 20. Fort Wayne took a 55-54 advantage into the half.
Canton built momentum steadily through the third quarter gaining a slight upper hand. Led by Biggs and Aguido, the Charge finished the quarter ahead with a score of 82-77.
Darrington Hobson came alive late in the contest as he led the Mad Ants to the win in the fourth quarter. With 30 seconds remaining in the game, Trent Strickland hit a well-defended fade away jumper to put the Charge ahead by a point. Hobson responded with his biggest shot of the night on the next possession and put Fort Wayne ahead for good despite a frenzied final possession that saw four shot attempts from the Charge that didn’t find the bottom of the net.
Lazare led the Mad Ants with a game-high 24 points, and Ron Howard and Hobson chipped in 21 and 22 points respectively.
Agudio led the Charge with 19 points, and Strickland finished one behind with 18 points of his own.
