South Bend (Indiana's NewsCenter)- Despite trailing 4-1 at the end of the fourth inning, the Fort Wayne TinCaps rallied for four runs over the final four innings, earning a 5-1, come-from-behind victory over the South Bend Silver Hawks Wednesday night. With the victory, the TinCaps have now won five straight games, including the first two of a four-game series against the Silver Hawks.
Fort Wayne (24-14, 55-53) starter Chris Fetter allowed two runs in the first inning, as he made his third start of the year. In the second inning, he was drilled in the chest by a line drive off the bat of South Bend (18-20, 53-55) catcher Roidany Aguila. Fetter was removed from the game, and James Needy came on to pitch.
The TinCaps got on the board with a run in the top of the fourth, when Lee Orr singled home Mike Gallic, making it 2-1 Silver Hawks. In the bottom of the inning, though, South Bend added two more runs and held a 4-1 lead, which stood through the fifth.
It was Orr who came through again, this time in the sixth inning, with an RBI double to score Gallic. That run made it 4-2 in favor of South Bend. Travis Jankowski doubled home B.J. Guinn in the seventh, pulling Fort Wayne within a run at 4-3. The TinCaps scored the game-tying and go-ahead runs in the eighth, getting an Austin Hedges RBI single and a Kyle Gaedele sacrifice fly to take a 5-4 lead.
Matt Stites pitched a perfect ninth inning to secure his 10th save. The win went to Luis De La Cruz (4-4), who pitched three scoreless innings of relief. South Bend’s Seth Simmons (3-3) took the loss.
Game three of the series is scheduled for Thursday night at 7:05 PM. The scheduled starters are Colin Rea for the TinCaps and Andrew Barbosa for the Silver Hawks.
