Fort Wayne (Indiana's NewsCenter)- Austin Hedges knocked in three runs Wednesday night as the Fort Wayne TinCaps snapped a four-game losing streak, defeating the Beloit Snappers 6-3. Tyler Stubblefield sent two of his teammates in to score, and Dennis O’Grady pitched four innings of one-run relief to earn the victory for Fort Wayne.
The TinCaps had scored no more than three runs in any of their four previous games, but they scored three runs alone in the second inning against Snapper starter Tyler Jones (1-3). Hedges, Stubblefield and Travis Whitmore each contributed an RBI single in the inning, as Fort Wayne (11-8, 42-47) scored the game’s first runs.
Beloit (8-11, 47-42) answered back with two runs in the third inning. TinCaps starter Frank Garces surrendered back-to-back RBI singles to Miguel Sano and Drew Leachman, allowing the Snappers to cut the lead to 3-2. Garces worked his shortest outing since May 24th, tossing four innings, allowing two runs, walking four and striking out four.
Hedges came through again the seventh with an RBI double, allowing Whitmore to score from first base. Stubblefield contributed his second RBI single of the night, pushing the Fort Wayne lead to 5-2. Beloit notched a run against TinCaps reliever Dennis O’Grady (2-0) in the fifth inning, narrowing the deficit to 5-3. O’Grady pitched four innings, allowing four hits, one unearned run and he struck out two.
Hedges capped his second-ever three RBI game with a double in the eighth inning, scoring Travis Whitmore.
Game two of the series is scheduled for Thursday night at 7:05. The scheduled starters are Midwest League ERA leader Adys Portillo for the TinCaps, and Jason Wheeler for the Snappers.
