Fort Wayne (Indiana's NewsCenter) – In the finale of a four-game series at Parkview Field, the Bowling Green Hot Rods defeated the Fort Wayne TinCaps 8-2 on Tuesday night. The Hot Rods took three of four from Fort Wayne, scoring 35 runs over the course of the series. In the losing effort, Lee Orr hit his team-leading seventh home run of the year for the TinCaps.
Bowling Green (28-24) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning against Fort Wayne’s Cody Hebner (5-2). Hot Rods second baseman Juniel Querecuto laced a two-run double to left to score the game’s first two runs. Fort Wayne (24-28) answered with Orr’s solo home run in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 2-1.
Hebner allowed four more runs in the fifth inning as Bowling Green batters hit, in order, a single, double triple and home run to start the frame. Hebner was pulled with one out in the fifth, and was replaced by James Needy. In 4 1/3 innings, Hebner allowed a season-high six runs, walked two and struck out four.
Following the home run surrendered by Hebner, Fort Wayne Pitching Coach Willie Blair was ejected for arguing with base umpire John Libka. Blair was the first of four members of the TinCaps to be ejected on Tuesday.
Bowling Green starter Felipe Rivero (5-3) tossed six innings, allowing one run on four hits, no walks and he struck out a season-high-tying seven batters.
The Hot Rods, leading 6-1, scored again in the eighth to push their advantage to 7-1. An eighth Bowling Green run crossed in the ninth on a solo homer hit by catcher Matt Rice. Home plate umpire Alex Tosi ruled the ball fair, but Fort Wayne pitcher Matt Stites and Manager Jose Valentin disagreed. Both player and manager were ejected arguing the call.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, trailing 8-1, Orr doubled home Casey McElroy to make it 8-2. Hot Rods reliever Andrew Bellatti struck out Travis Whitmore to end the game. Following the strikeout, Tosi ejected Whitmore. Bellatti, who worked three innings, was credited with his third save of the year.
Beginning Wednesday, the TinCaps welcome the Great Lakes Loons to town for the first of a three-game series. The scheduled starters are Frank Garces for Fort Wayne and Ryan O’Sullivan for Great Lakes. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
