TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) - Canterbury once again reigns supreme in 1A girls basketball, beating Vincennes Rivet, 42-35, to claim a second consecutive IHSAA state championship Saturday morning.

The Lady Cavaliers have now also won five of the last six 1A state titles.

Canterbury survived a second half Rivet rally and their own offensive slump in the fourth quarter to win the game down the stretch.

"We kind of just let it slip through our fingers a little bit," Canterbury senior Bailey Farley says. "I was a little nervous for a second."

Canterbury junior Kindell Fincher scored 17 points and a state championship game record 19 rebounds. Sophomore Darby Maggard added 11 points.

"I couldn't even think of a better way for this to pay off," says sophomore Katherine Smith, who played a vital role in the postseason run. "I've worked so hard. It's the best feeling right now."

Canterbury head coach Wayne Kreiger now adds a state title to his hall of fame career.

"Everybody dug down," Kreiger says. "We worked too hard to get this point and let tired take over."

Under the new IHSAA classification guidelines, Canterbury will move up to Class 2A starting next year. But with a seasoned group of veterans returning, the Lady Cavs should be up to the challenge.

Canterbury will hold a championship rally at 2:15 p.m. Monday to honor the Lady Cavs.
