NOTRE DAME, Indiana (21 Alive) - Bishop Dwenger grad and Notre Dame defensive lineman Tony Springmann will miss 14th ranked Notre Dame's football season opener against Temple with a knee injury.

But even more serious on the injury front is the loss of starting linebacker Danny Spond to a career ending condition believed to be from migraines and concussions.

Spond told the team Saturday he was finished as a player, and coach Brian Kelly said Spond and his family would address the media on the situation next week..

As for Springmann, an MRI is scheduled for next week to determine how bad his knee injury is and how much time he will miss beyond the opener.
