FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21 Alive) – Sixth-ranked Saint Francis put the finishing touches on its 17th preseason football camp Saturday night at D'Arcy Stadium with the offense scoring 27 points and the defense making some big plays as well.

“I thought we did a lot of positive things on both sides of the ball,” USF Head Coach Kevin Donley said immediately after the scrimmage attended by several hundred Cougars fans.

“We had some players make some big plays and I’m sure after we review video that we’ll notice even more good things. It’s been a real good camp. Now it’s time to get to work focusing on that first game on September 4.”

Saturday night's scrimmage was as close to a dress rehearsal as the Cougars will get, playing two 15-minute regulation quarters with officials.

Classes start on Monday at USF.

Quarterback Logan Rehrer threw the first touchdown pass of the scrimmage connecting with Montay McDowell for a 22-yard strike.

Bradley Jarzab connected with Seth Coate for a 49-yard scoring strike in the second quarter and freshman Jared Knaus plowed in for a short TD with 6:08 to play in the second quarter.

New USF placekicker Ryan Nix made an impression kicking field goals of 42 and 52 yards.

Freshman Lee Stewart had an interception and a fumble recovery for the USF defense, and another freshman, Trevon Wilson, added an interception for the USF defense.

“Most importantly, I think we came through preseason camp pretty healthy,” Donley concluded. “We had a few who didn’t go tonight, but those who did showed great effort and determination. We’ve got some talent who can make some plays. But we’ve also got plenty to work on as we point toward our opener.”
