FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry helped kick off the "2011 Senior Games."
Monday morning's torch lighting ceremony marked the start of the 34th annual competition, which is designed to encourage residents 50 and older to keep moving for physical and mental health.
Modeled after the Olympics, athletes compete in more than 20 events.
No more than 250 seniors are expected to take part in this year's games.
Parks Director Al Moll said, “Any time you can get a group of people getting somewhat competitive, win loss is irrelevant, just getting outside, doing something active, getting them away from the TV, it helps lifestyles as a whole."
The mayor challenged Moll to a friendly game of corn hole to help kick off the festivities.
That's one of the events in the Senior Games.
To participate, call the Parks Department at 427-6460.
