FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) – Fort Wayne City Council members joined Mayor Tom Henry today in co-authoring the ordinance to cut garbage and recycling rates by $1 million.
City Council members Karen Goldner (D-2nd District), Glynn Hines (D-6th District) and Marty Bender (R-At-Large) announced their support for the $1 million savings today.
Mayor Henry announced yesterday that the garbage and recycling programs have cut waste costs by $1 million. The rate reduction will save residents an estimated 10%, or a dollar per month, in services per year.
Henry said 68% of residents joined the recycling program. That alone generated half a million dollars because there is less garbage going into landfills. The other half a million was generated by utilizing the competitive bidding process in awarding garbage contracts.
Goldner said that saving money and picking up garbage is not a Democratic or Republican issue, it is about families in Fort Wayne.
”In tough economic times, it's especially good to be able to help Fort Wayne families. I think that we'll be maybe looking at something more than a dollar a month savings, which isn't a lot, but it's the right direction, and so really I think the right step.”
Bender said he also thinks this ordinance is taking things in the right direction. Bender expects quite a bit of support from the council and sees no reason why they would not approve of the savings.
Council members also unveiled a survey, by Gershman, Brickner and Bratton, on how Fort Wayne’s garbage and recycling services rate compared to other Midwest cities. Fort Wayne’s average monthly costs per household are actually lower than other cities equivalent in size and services.
Madison, Wis. = $19.50/ month
Toledo, Ohio = $15/month without recycling
Des Moines, Iowa = $12/month
Akron, Ohio = $19.50/month
Evansville, Ind. = $11.80/month
Fort Wayne, Ind. = $9.95/month
Mayor Henry and supporting council members will propose the ordinance on August 9.
