FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) – Local Boy Scouts took to the skies at Smith Field Airport.

This is the fifth consecutive year for some local boy scouts to earn their aviation merit badge.

During their time scouts took part in every step it takes for them to earn the badge—doing everything from touring an airport, learning about aviation careers and even flying an airplane.

“They'll go up for a 15-20 minute flight and the one who sits in the front will have the opportunity to fly the airplane,” said Laramie Resler, Young Eagles Coordinator with the Boy Scouts.

The aviation merit badge is one of more than 130 badges a Boy Scout may earn.
