Fort Wayne, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control is still looking for the person(s) responsible for burning a kitten with fireworks.
We are also told the kitten is still recovering, and will not be up for adoption for quite some time.
It seems whenever abuse happens to a child or to an animal people get very upset. Animal Care and Control investigators are looking for the person or people responsible for the abuse of a kitten.
Belinda Lewis, Director of Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control (AC&C) says she believes someone banded fireworks to the kitten's tail. A concerned citizen brought the kitten in Monday, saying it was found around the 4700 block of Foxgrove Avenue, close to the intersection of Washington Center... And Yellowstone Drive.
Lewis says the kitten smelled of sulfur And had pieces of carbon in its fur. That’s not all—there are severe burns on the pads of the kitten's paws and its whiskers are burned off.
The kitten has been treated and is doing okay, but people in the neighborhood are upset.
“I am absolutely disgusted. I can’t believe this happened in my neighborhood,” said a woman who asked to remain anonymous. “There’s fireworks going off all the time, but to attach one to a kitten’s tail is disturbing. If people can do that, I just, I just don’t understand. There’s just something not right with them.”
Investigators with AC&C say they’ve gotten tips on who could be responsible for the crime, but the investigation remains open. Anyone with information is encouraged to call them at
(260) 427-1244 or Crime Stoppers at (260) 436-7867.
AC&C officials say torturing an animal is considered a Class D felony. Criminals must pay a $10,000 fine and can spend six months to three years in jail.
“I don’t think the $10,000 fine is enough. If they can be trusted, maybe they should be made to do community service in say, Animal Control? Clean cages, something. It needs to be stern,” the woman said.
Lewis released a video of the kitten's injuries Wednesday. Watch it below:
