FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.nbc33.com) – We’ve all seen the billboards around town, and heard the radio commercials telling us to “Visit South Bend,” or come to “Pure Michigan.” But does Fort Wayne have anything like that?
You may be surprised.
While Fort Wayne does not have any billboards around the Midwest, you may see - or hear – advertisements bolstering the Summit City. The city’s visitor’s bureau “Visit Fort Wayne" primarily uses TV and radio spots, as well as a few print ads, to highlight a number of the city's attractions in an attempt to appeal to potential tourists.
A trend they see on the rise, however, is the effectiveness of the oldest trick in the book - word of mouth.
"Almost 40% of people who visit Fort Wayne are visiting to visit friends and family, relatives, they are here for some reason like that,” Kristen Guthrie, the Director of Marketing for Visit Fort Wayne points out. “And they are tourists, they are visitors at the same time and so it is really important for Fort Wayne residents to get out and feel that pride, and enjoy the things we have here in Fort Wayne and share it. Because that's a great way to spread the word."
This summer alone, Visit Fort Wayne spent roughly $115,000 in various ads strategically placed in Midwestern cities between 50 and 200 miles away.
