FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) -- The final piece of the puzzle has been put in place, improving interstate access to the Parkview Regional Medical Center in north Fort Wayne.
Mid morning Friday, INDOT crews opened a ramp, allowing traffic on Union Chapel Road to go northbound onto Interstate 69 headed to the city of Auburn and other destinations beyond.
Before, you could already exit 69 at Union Chapel, in both directions, and the southbound entrance onto 69 has been operational too, so this latest development finishes a major road construction undertaking in less than 18 months.
Parkview Hospital officials kicked in $10-million, the majority of the overall price tag, to get the project moved up the INDOT priority list.
The investment makes a lot of sense from the Parkview perspective.
There's so much traffic on Dupont Road, on the south perimeter of the hospital property, opening up access to and from the campus off Union Chapel is a huge plus.
" We estimate we see as many as 4,000 cars on the Parkview Regional Medical Center campus every day. It's a safe guess that at least 25 percent of those vehicles will now use the Union Chapel entrance on the northside of the campus, and that frees up the traffic flow on Dupont Road," said Eric Clabaugh, a spokesperson for Parkview Health.
A roundabout is being constructed on Union Chapel on the bridge above Interstate 69.
Indeed, the opening of all four ramps has not solved all the road construction hassles in the immediate area.
Work is still going on to the west at Union Chapel and Old Auburn Road, where another roundabout is being built to better move traffic along, as there are so many new housing additions nearby.
Motorists will want to use Coldwater and Dupont Roads as detour routes until around Christmas time, when the whole network of roadways will be fully connected.
