FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - It is being billed as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, by Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry.
Residents have the chance to suggest how the city should invest $76.7 million in our community.
The money is proceeds from the Fort Wayne Community Trust and Indiana Michigan Power city light lease agreement.
The money was previously reported as $75 million dollars.
However, after recalculating community members will have input on how to spend, $76.7 million dollars.
The Community Trust Fund holds $37.5 million dollars.
The I&M Settlement Fund holds $39.2 million dollars.
Meanwhile, the Fort Wayne Legacy Task Force held its first meeting Thursday night at the City-County Building.
"Personally, I would like to see us create the kind of place in Fort Wayne, where our young people would be glad to come back," said Fort Wayne Legacy Task Force Co-Chair Dr. Quinton Dixie.
The mission of the Legacy Task Force is:
1. Create an investment philosophy
2. Clearly define community impact areas & programs that need money
3. Engage the public in the process of developing recommendations, that will presented to Mayor Henry in the Summer of 2011.
"Part of our challenge is to attract jobs to Fort Wayne and attract talent. But we also have the challenge of trying to keep the talented young people that we have. So, how do we create the kind of Fort Wayne, where young people who are here now, would be glad to come back," said Dixie, who is an Assistant Professor of Religious Studies at IPFW.
The next Task Force meeting will be on Thursday, February 10, 2011, at 6:00 p.m. at the Allen County Public Library in Meeting Room B/C.
However, community input meetings and community input focus groups will not be held until March, 2011.
In the meantime, community members can submit their ideas at www.feedbackfortwayne.org.
The city run website, allows residents to type in their suggestions on feedbackfortwayne.org's homepage.
The site, allows gives residents the opportunity to vote in support of other people's suggestions.
