National Start! Walking Day

The American Heart Association, PHP and Parkview Health invite residents and workers to celebrate National Start! Walking Day at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 6, with a free walk at Parkview Field. Participants completing the one-third mile walk around the concourse will receive a goody bag and will be entered to win Start! prizes. Parkview Field’s lunch cart will also offer healthy lunch options at a minimal cost.

If Allen County residents and workers can’t attend the Parkview Field event, the following facilities have opened their walking tracks to non-members for National Start! Walking Day:
• Jorgensen YMCA – the walking track is open free to non-members from 5 am to 10 pm
• Spiece Fitness – the walking track is open free to non-members April 6-10. Simply mention National Start Walking Day or American Heart Association

Or simply take a walk around your office building or neighborhood!

A person is 1.5 to 2.4 times more likely to have coronary heart disease if he or she is inactive, but walking vigorously for 30 minutes a day can reduce high blood pressure and cholesterol, reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke. Studies show that some adults may gain as many as two hours of life expectancy for each hour of regular, vigorous physical activity, such as very brisk walking.

In its fifth year, National Start! Walking Day calls on Americans to incorporate 30 minutes of walking into their day. To begin walking regularly, at any physical activity level, visit startwalkingnow.org to access tools, walking plans, a list of walking paths and to download the new smart phone walking path application.

The American Heart Association has been working to certify official Start! walking paths across the country so walkers can find safe, free places to walk. In 2010, Parkview Field was the designated Indiana’s first Start! Walking path by the American Heart Association. It joined a list of hundreds of Start! Walking paths designated across the country. To view all paths nationwide or to map a custom walking route in your neighborhood, visit www.startwalkingnow.org.

Parkview Field’s concourse is open year round at no cost to walkers every day from 7 a.m. to dusk. Memorial Day through Labor Day, walkers can also purchase lunch from its lunch cart.
