Local 10 year old Madeline Cumbey has received a $500 United Health Heroes grant to begin a service garden in southwest Fort Wayne. Southwinds Church, located at 3410 Dicke RD, has generously donated grounds and their teen and tween youth group has agreed to help Madeline tend the SMART Garden program. The SMART(Service, Multi-purpose, Activity, Really cool, teaching) garden will raise organic vegetables over the summer to provide food for area food banks. Madeline is the youngest national youth advisory board member for The Alliance for a Healthier Generation. She has started 2 smart2bfit clubs in Ft.Wayne in which she teaches area youth the need to eat better and move more. The Southwinds' SMART garden is the second SMART garden she has started in Ft. Wayne.Her work has been mentioned by first lady Michelle Obama about youth making a difference for health. The community is invited to attend the ceremonial ground breaking & seed planting on Sun., April 17th at approximately 11:40pm.
