February is American Heart Month, a month when the American Heart Association highlights its year-round mission of building healthier lives free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. Cardiovascular diseases, including stroke, are the leading cause of death in Indiana, causing 18,244 deaths (32.2%) in 2008 (latest figures available).
During American Heart Month, the association focuses on its Go Red For Women movement. More women die of heart disease than all forms of cancer combined. Currently some eight million women in the U.S. are living with heart disease, yet only one in six women believes that heart disease is her greatest health threat. In fact, 90 percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease.
The American Heart Association will host several events and activities in and around the Fort Wayne area to commemorate American Heart Month. Details about the following events and more can be found at Heart.org/FortWayne or on the American Heart Association Fort Wayne Facebook and Twitter pages.
