HJCL wins second at state

After a year's of hard work, Homestead High School Junior Classical League competed at the 59th Annual 2012 IJCL State Convention at Indiana University, March 9 to 10.
With 34 delegates, the club won 2nd in the Sweepstakes Awards and accumulated 118 top five awards. These awards were won in the following categories: graphic arts, creative arts, academics. The two day competition consisted of Certamen, a game similar to Jeopardy, an IJCL "Minute to Win It" activity, a pizza party, a Roman banquet, a presentation titled "Latin Lingo in Modern Medicine, and countless more. Also, "That's Entertainment," comparable to a talent show, included four of HJCL's members: Danika Bailey, Emily Baker, Darby Cook, Rachel Klein.
Homestead won the Delegate Spirit Award, one of numerous categories. This award has not been won by HHS in 14 years. The prize, an over-sized megaphone, then had "Homestead '12" placed on it.
Making history, another major category won by HJCL is the Publicity Award. Never, in the club's history, has Homestead won 1st in this category. Publicity's main premise is to gain awareness of the club and Roman culture. The club took home the trophy with over 13,000 points.
Other wins include 2nd Place in the Helen Wampler Spirit Award and 2nd in the Sharon Gibson Community Service Award.
William Ngo entered his Forum Factorum newsletter in the Editorial Award category, placing 2nd. Courtney McGrew worked on a local scrapbook all year long and was awarded with a 4th place ribbon.
Certamen consisted of three levels- novice, intermediate, advanced. All three teams qualified into the final round, and the results are as listed: HHS Novice Team- 3rd Place, HHS Intermediate Team- 2nd Place, HHS Advanced Team- 2nd Place.
Individual Awards are handed out for graphic arts, creative arts, and academics. The winners would be determined by how many projects were submitted and how they placed. David Landrigan was awarded an Individual Creative Arts Trophy. Along with David, William Ngo was given an Individual Graphic Arts Trophy.
The very last award announced was the Sweepstakes Award. HJCL won 2nd in the State, a very proud placing.
Even though the road to IJCL State Convention has ended, club members now have the opportunity to compete at a national level at the National Junior Classical League. States from all over the country will come together for the week-long convention from July 26th to 31st. The 2012 Nationals will be held at Wake-Forest University, North Carolina.
Congratulations to all HJCL State participants!
