Because of outstanding support from the community, 33 boxes containing a total of 436 pairs of shoes were picked up from the Kendallville Public Library by representatives from the Northeast Indiana Solid Waste Management District on Thursday (January 31, 2008).
The shoes were collected by the Kendallville Public Library’s After School Care students, on behalf of the Noble County Humane Society. Once the shoes are cleaned up and sold to agencies who deliver them to people in need, the Humane Society will receive the money from the sale of the shoes. Recently, shoes were sent to the victims of hurricane Katrina and the tsunami in Thailand, and they often go to many other places where people just can’t afford shoes.
The Humane Society will use the funds to help offset the costs of caring for the many dogs and cats that are taken in each year.
The Kendallville Public Library’s After School Care students take on a community service project each month. This time, there was an incredible outpouring of support. The students’ original goal was to collect 100 shoes, and because of outstanding support from the community, they were able to more than quadruple that amount.
