From the moment you meet Cynthia Presser, two things are clear: (1) she is passionate about food and (2) she is equally proud of her Brazilian heritage. Born and raised in the southern region of Brazil, she began experimenting with food at a young age.
“I made a lot of mistakes,” she said, but she kept working, refin- ing her recipes, and now she proudly shares her love of Brazilian food with family and friends. “My husband enjoys my food so much, so he encouraged me to share it with others.”
Presser launched a website (www.cynthiapresser.com) in 2011 to share photos and recipes of her culinary creations, and last year she took it a step further by organizing Taste of Brazil, an event hosted at The Philmore on Broadway, featuring Brazilian food and entertainment.
Music and dance will be provided by Chicago Samba. A band that has been delighting audiences for over 20 years with their traditional Brazilian song and dance.
“The response was overwhelming,” explains Presser. “People kept asking me when we were going to do it again. I think our community longs for more cultural experiences.”
The evening’s menu includes Yucca/Plantain Chips with Chimichurri Sauce, Shrimp and Yucca Gratin, Picanha and Chimichurri sauce, Pastel, Chicken Bobo and Shrimp Moqueca, all prepared by the chefs from Catablu from Presser’s carefully crafted recipes.
With the help of her husband, the staff at The Philmore and the chefs from Catablu, Presser will host the 2nd Annual Taste of Brazil on July 14 at 7p.m. The cost to attend, $37.50 per person, includes a complimentary drink at the door.
“Though Brazilian food varies from region to region, all of the dishes at the event are lively, rich and full of deep flavors,” explains Presser.
I want everyone to try Caipirinha, the most popular Brazilian drink,” says Presser. “It’s a lime flavored concoction made with sugar and Brazilian rum. We will also have a drink station where people can try other flavors such as pineapple-mint and strawberry.”
What can guests expect at Taste of Brazil?
“It’s going to be a colorful, vibrant party that transports at- tendees to Rio for one night of high-energy entertainment and flavor-packed culinary treasures,”
