To my amazement, I was watching a squirrel hanging upside down on our suet feeder; acrobaticly, to see if he could catch a nibble. When all of a sudden, a huge shadow came over our woods, when I looked up, I saw that it was a bald eagle! My heart was racing, I was so shocked that it had landed high in a tree about a acre away from where I stood in my kitchen. I ran, screaming to get my camera and changed the lens on it for magnifying. I took about 18 pictures of it in the 20 minutes that it stayed in the tree. He was watching all of the squirrels running around in the woods. In one of my pics, you can see a squirrel about 6 feet in front of the eagle and in the next pic, there is a black bird that distracts the eagle from it's prey. The eagle just looked at the black bird, opened it's mouth and the black bird flew away. What a beautiful sight to behold, I am a wildlife artist and thankful for the blessing to see that we have the American Bald Eagle in our area of Indiana.

Just outside my Fort Wayne window a big female eagle landed and devoured a nice black squirrel who stood out in the white snow.Why the black squirrel when there were at least 5 fox squirrel nearby.? I live in Woodland lakes.
Bald Eagles eat Fish not Squirrels. That was either a hawk or a falcon

Actually, c h, Bald eagles will eat antyhin that they can catch. Not jost fish.
They are truely beautiful birds. They eat fish, and their habitats are lakes, rivers, marshes and seacoasts. I see them in Michigan in the Newaygo State Park area. Thank you for sharing your pictures. Very exciting!!!
Bald eagles are quite prominent here in Florida lately. Thank the demise of DDT for that. We are all better for the ban, especially the wildlife.
Even though they are fish eaters, they will take ducks and birds or whatever prey is available and easiest to obtain. (from the encyclopedia)
I saw a bald eagle near Loon Lake several years ago. It lifted up off the ground with a full grown rabbit in its talons. I nearly drove off the road when it launched beside me!
My husband worked in Churubusco about 14 years ago. During his daily commute from Fort Wayne to 'Busco he frequently saw Bald Eagles. It is good to know they are still in the area.
Eagles are birds of prey and will prey on mice, rats, rabbits, squirrels, etc. That is why we are starting to see more of these eagles around here, especially now as these sources of food are easy to see and pleniful.
The black and grey squirrels are less aggresive than the fox squirrels, the eagles know this and choose to prey on them over the red fox squirrels. It seems in some areas, the black and grey squirrels are more plentiful. Easy meals for the eagles.
The DDT ban had pluses and minuses-- consider the effect on the people of Africa and spreading mosquito-borne disease. The real problem with DDT was that it was over-used by some, thus causing the damage.
I thought I saw one in blue lake too. Only I thought it was a golden eagle. It was flying over a penninsula next to a channel. All I know is I saw a huge mostly brown bird being pecked at by a bunch of nasty red-winged blackbirds.

THAT IS GREAT TO KNOW THAT THE BALD EAGLES ARE AROUND HERE, IN THIS PART OF INDIANA! I BET IS WAS REALLY EXCITING TO SEE HIM!
