Sunspot 0999

The Quiet Sun

This image of the sun was taken on June 20th and shows only one sunspot. Astronomers call this sunspot "Number 0999". Things are relatively quiet. The sunspot, visible slightly to the right near the center of the image, looks tiny but is roughly 75% the diameter of the earth. Sunspots are cool areas on the surface of the sun. They are caused by changes in the magnetic field near the sun's surface.

The image was taken through a TeleView 101mm refractor telescope. It was captured using a 1/100 second exposure at ISO 100 on a Canon 40D digital camera and processed through Maxim/DL for color rendering.
