As I walked out my door, I was startled by a large bug in my face. The bug then flew down into the petunias in my flowerbed. It finally stayed on one long enough to recognize that the insect was a hummingbird moth. Its approximately 2 1/2 inches long and beats its wings constantly like a hummingbird as it drinks nectar from flowers. This is only the third hummingbird moth that I've seen in the last two years. They're very unique and interesting to watch, but if you get too close they will fly away.
