My son Bryce (7 years old) learned about monarch caterpillars at day camp this summer at Lakewood Park Christian School in Auburn. We decided to start our own project at home the first of July. We did all the work ourselves and didn't buy anything. We found the milkweed and eggs and raised them from the egg, to the caterpillar, to the chrysalis (pupa or what you may know as a cocoon) and then finally to a beautiful monarch. We've had 28 monarch caterpillars this year which we named like hurricanes starting at the letter A. We gave 2 to the school, 9 made it through the entire process and became butterflies (4 males and 5 females), 2 are waiting to emerge from his/her chrysalis, 1 is still a caterpillar and 15 died.
