Squirrel on ice

Resident stays busy feeding the animals

The power was out and all the wild animals were hungry. Friday Dec. 19, 2008, the squirrels were having a very rough day, frequently bombarded by falling, ice-covered, tree limbs, and pelted by the continuous, unpleasant drizzle of chilly, freezing rain. One animal lover stayed busy most of the day fiddling with bird feeders, hanging suet, and making sure all the critters were fed. Feeder guests included Downy Woodpeckers, House Finches, American Goldfinches, Nut Hatches, Mourning Doves, Sparrows, Starlings, and many others who didn't leave their names. Contrary to some beliefs, squirrels and birds do feed quite comfortably together and all were quite satisfied with the smorgasbord of nuts, grains, and various winter berry seed cakes.
