An Unexpected Guest

An Unexpected Visitor Arrives

One morning we opened our front door and there sat a painted turtle (we live in a neighborhood with no pond). It was a pleasant surprise and rather than leave it outside to get hurt, we put it in an aquarium to be released later into the wild at a neighboring pond. We called it Little "Spirit" Turtle as it was a painted turtle. I am Miami Indian of which Little Turtle was chief and named for the painted turtle. And to make it easier for the grandchildren to say, we called it Little "Spirit" Turtle rather than Mihsihkinaahkwa (Miami word for Little Turtle).
