My beautiful girl.

One-Eyed Monster

Monster came in to the Grabill Vet Clinic August 2008. She was a four week old kitten with her right eye damaged and hanging out of the socket. Her owners wanted her put down and did not want to have it surgical removed. The corrective surgery needed (eye removal) would be simple to perform and because of her young age she'd recover quickly, but the owners still wanted her put down. So instead of euthanasia, the doctor suggested the clinic "adopt" her and fix her up then find her a home. I was working at the Grabill Vet Clinic at that time and ended up taking her. She is a distrustful cat around most people, but her and I have an unshakable bond. She trusts me completely, as no animal has ever trusted me before. She's taught me so much about myself and she entertains me endlessly. Monster fetches hair ties, a behavior she developed herself. When she wants to play she brings me one and sits it down then meows until I throw it. She races after it, jumping all around it and batting it, then picks it up and brings it to me so we can repeat. She fetches better than some dogs I know! When she was about 10 months old I was taking a college class on Animal Behavior and had to do a term paper on an aspect of behavior. I decided to clicker train Monster as my term paper topic. It only took a week and a half before Monster could sit on command! She's very smart. Her big sister, Church (also rescued as a kitten and one of Monster's constant companions), wasn't bright enough to pick up the behavior...she just likes to sneak the cheese treats Monster earns when she sits for me. After my Animal Behavior paper was completed I continued Monster's training because she really responded positively to it. She currently targets (follows a ball on a stick around, "targeting" it) and she comes when she's called. Monster is a great cat and a fantastic rescue story. I can't imagine my life without her and seeing as she just turned a year old this month, I'll have many years to come with his adorable cat!
