ON INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY...
Mayor Declares March 8 Fort Wayne Girls and Women in Sports Day
2:00 p.m. at Elmhurst High School Gym (3829 Sand Point Road; 46809)
(Rescheduled following Feb 9 snow storm)
Fort Wayne - On March 8th, on International Women's Day and in the midst
of Women's History Month, Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry joins the Fort
Wayne Women's Bureau, Fort Wayne Community Schools, the Fort Wayne Derby
Girls and many uniformed female athletes of Northeast Indiana -
including six young swimmers of Fort Wayne Aquatics, a team coached by
two-time Olympic Gold Medalist, Matt Vogel - to remember the importance
of sports in the lives of women and girls.
He'll read a proclamation that recognizes that women and girls have a
rich tradition of sports, and should be honored with continuing support
for sports equality and increased access in Fort Wayne and in the state
of Indiana.
More statistics will be given at the conference but here is one of the
most noteworthy to be discussed: 82 percent of executive businesswomen
played sports, with the majority saying lessons learned on the playing
field contributed to their successes.
Please join us to celebrate the day and hear real stories about how
girls and women have benefited from Title IX of the Education Amendments
of 1972, the statute prohibiting sex discrimination in educational
institutions that receive federal funds.
