Homestead High School's Junior Classical League (JCL) headed down to Indiana State University, Terre Haute to compete in the 60th annual Indiana State Convention against schools throughout the entire state on March 15-16.
The two-day convention consisted of graphic arts, creative arts and academic testings, which all would be accumulated to determine the Sweepstakes Award, an overall category. The Latin club finished second, an impressive and hard-earned placing.
Apart from competition, the students' agenda also included a Roman banquet, a pizza party, a Rent-a-Roman ( mock "slave auction") and Ludi(games/activities).
Michelle Bonahoom led the state delegation as the 2012-2013 state president. Former Homestead Latin club member, Christina Peters, made an appearance to give a presentation about Classical perceptions and treatments of mental illnesses.
The 1st and 2nd year teams won their respective divisions in certamen, a Latin form of Jeopardy where a reader asks questions pertaining mythology, grammar, vocabulary, etc.
Alicia Cuellar and William Ngo led the Homestead delegation to a second consecutive win in Delegate Spirit. Spirit consists of timed 15-minute sessions where each school may chant and cheer to emit enthusiasm and charisma.
The school won second in publicity, amassing over 10,000 points throughout the year as well. The primary purpose of publicity is to spread the word of the club and gain awareness of evident Roman influence in the world today.
JCL took home a plaque and first place ribbon for their Community Service Award. Earlier this year, the students visited Lutheran Children's Hospital, where they read and enacted mythology stories. Afterwards, they created crafts and played games with the children patients. Also as a team, the club won second in Helen Wampler Spirit, determined by the amount of projects done within the school building.
The club newsletter, Forum Factorum, created by William, won first place. Courtney Delacuesta and Courntey McGrew's scrapbook earned 1st place as well.
HJCL won well over 100 top five awards altogether. William won a handful of ribbons, ultimately earning him an Individual Graphic Arts trophy.
After 25 years of dedication and headship, club sponsor Kathy Adair attended her last competition due to her retirement at the end of the school year.
Despite the end of State, this would not be the last level of competition for several members. During the summer, the National Junior Classical League Convention will be held at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Some have chosen to attend that week-long event, where they will represent Indiana against other states.

Homestead Junior Classical League members headed to Cathedral High School, Indianapolis, along with schools throughout the state, to compete in the year's first Certamen Invitational, an academic game similar to Jeopardy.
Every Thursday after school, students would meet to practice and play with mock questions to prepare for the knowledge-based game. Questions pertaining Roman/Greek culture, grammar, mythology and more were asked.
There are three levels of difficulty in Certamen - Novice, Intermediate and Advanced. For some members, this meet would be their first competition, but they did not let that discourage them.
Certamen is played a total of three rounds, not including the final round. During the first three games, teams play against each other, trying to gain the most points. Each question is worth 10 points, and if the team answers that question correctly, it is followed by two bonus questions, each worth five points.
After the three rounds are over, the teams from each level with the three highest scores move onto the final championship round, where previous scores are exempted. The team with the highest score in the end is crowned winner.
HHS took two teams to Cathedral High School, one Novice team and one Advanced team. After a challenging three games, the Advanced team earned 6th place while the Novice team moved onto the final round. In the final round, the team of four gathered 115 points, enough to win itself a 1st place trophy.
With the next competition in three weeks, which Homestead will be hosting, students will be practicing and studying harder than ever.

Homestead's Junior Classical League has tackled a semester of hard work and dedication in hopes of placing high at state competition. After finishing second in Sweepstakes last year, the overall category, the group of students are determined to top that accomplishment by winning a grand prize trophy.
During the Halloween time, the Latin club volunteered at one of city's biggest attractions, the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo. Throughout the weekends of October, families had the opportunity to take their children trick-or-treating onsite. Festively dressed up as Romans, members worked at several stations to hand out candies such as PixiStixs, LaffyTaffys and Nerds.
The stations were playful and interactive for the kids. One spot had a treasure-chest filled with corn kernels, and trick-or-treaters had to reach in to see what treasures they would find.
Along with the Wild Zoo Halloween event, HJCL assembled small mythology candy bundles. The fun craft included a Smarties, a story about the wise Minerva and arrogant Arachne and a spider ring. These creations were handed out at members' houses.
The club also attended Indiana Fall Latin Day at Herron High School, the organizations first statewide gathering. The informative day provided advice and ideas for the upcoming competition year. Workshops explained major factors like publicity and art competitions.
A mock-certamen game was played as well. Certamen is a buzzer-game, similar to Jeopardy, where questions pertaining culture, grammar and mythology are asked. Before state convention, the state will hold two certamen invitationals, one of which will be held at Homestead High School.
Herron High School performed "The Greeks in the Beginning" play and a catapult contest was held too. In the contest, HJCL finished second.
For the holiday season, members volunteered at Barnes & Noble for a couple of days to gift wrap. During these session, members would complimentary wrap any items the shoppers would like.
Throughout the year so far, members have been publicizing the club through banners, flyers, decorations, radio announcements and more. These actions will all go towards the Publicity Contest, in which the club won first last year and fourth in the entire nation.
Certamen practices have been consistently held every week at the school for those who plan on competing at the invitationals and state convention as well. Local club officers have been brainstorming for more events to perform in the community too.
With the road to state convention half over, HJCL will work diligently to end the journey stronger than ever.
