EVANSVILLE, Indiana (March 14, 2013) – On Saturday afternoon, the Urbana University women’s basketball team concluded its season with a conference championship. The Blue Knights defeated Trevecca Nazarene University 70-63 for the G-MAC title, Urbana’s first basketball conference championship in 14 years. Today, one of the victors got her spoils.

Sophomore Ciara Geiger (Ft. Wayne, IN/Carroll HS) became the first Blue Knight women’s basketball player to earn NCAA Division II Daktronics, Inc. All-Midwest Region honors. Geiger was named to the Second Team in one of the toughest regions in the country, joining Blue Knight soccer standouts Tyler Wason and Abby Pearson as Urbana’s other All-Midwest Region honorees this school year.

Prior to the start of the G-MAC Tournament, Geiger was named the conference’s Player of the Year. The 5-9 shooting guard led the G-MAC in scoring, averaging 18.4 points per game. Her scoring average places her 23rd in the country in Division II. Geiger also led the conference in three-point shooting. She made 79 threes at a 42% clip. Her three-point shooting percentage is the ninth best in the country.

Geiger was named G-MAC Athlete of the Week a conference-record five times out of 15 total weeks. She scored 20 or more points in twelve games this season, including the G-MAC Championship Game. On December 15th against the NAIA’s seventh ranked team, Geiger exploded for a career-high tying 31 points thanks to 9 of 13 shooting from behind the arc. Her nine threes in one game tied a school record and were topped by just two players in D-II this year.

After just two seasons, Geiger already ranks 12th on Urbana’s all-time scoring list. She has started the first 59 games of her UU career, scoring 995 points.

Geiger is more than a pure scorer for the Blue Knights. She also averaged 4.7 rebounds, 2.7 assists and a conference-best 2.5 steals per game this season. In her two-year career, Geiger has posted single-game highs of 12 rebounds, 10 assists and 9 steals.

Geiger was joined on the Daktronics, Inc. All-Midwest Region Second Team by Southern Indiana sophomore forward/center Anna Hackert, Michigan Tech senior guard Samantha Hoyt, Lewis sophomore forward Jess Reinhart, Grand Valley State senior guard/forward Briauna Taylor, Ferris State junior guard Sara DeShone, and Wayne State senior forward Talisha Bridges.

Ashland senior guard/forward Kari Daugherty was named the Daktronics, Inc. Midwest Region Player of the Year for the second consecutive season in a vote by the region’s sports information directors.

Daugherty, the 2011-12 WBCA National Player of the Year, has been spectacular in her final season with the Eagles. The 6-foot-1 All-American led Ashland to a 31-1 overall record and a 21-1 mark in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.

Her 21.9 points and 13.6 rebounds per contest, both of which rank in the top three of the NCAA Division II, helped the Eagles capture both the GLIAC regular-season and tournament titles, and have positioned Ashland as the number one seed and host of this weekend’s NCAA II Midwest Region Tournament.

Joining Daugherty on the Daktronics, Inc. All-Midwest Region First Team is fellow teammate and classmate Daiva Gerbec, Indianapolis junior guard Katy McIntosh, Indianapolis senior guard Kristin Turner, and Findlay senior guard/forward Kayla Brown.

This really isn't my story to tell; and unfortunately I do not know much about it. One of my Facebook friends posted it on his wall, and I couldn't help but share it on my wall. However, I feel like more people than just my friends should see this video. It's not posted anywhere on YouTube, but it needs to go viral. It is just a loving dad posting a video on his Facebook page about his very brave handicap son wrestling with a another brave little boy. Please load the following link and watch.
